    Signals and coordination¶

    A city at night where every tower carries a clock, all wired to a spark in the sky and to a row of semaphore masts. Clerks read ticker tape by lamplight, a nurse sits by a bedside, and beneath the street a long drive shaft of great wheels throws a spark at its far end.
